One of the classics in the independent audio drama scene, this heartfelt and intimate drama, which slowly grows into something a whole lot bigger, has some of the best writing and acting in any drama out there.
Great characters, great story. It starts very disconnected and it's really lovely to see how everything slowly comes together. The voice actors all do a brilliant job!
This was the podcast that started my audiodrama obsession. It made me cry, laugh, and want to be a better storyteller. As someone who loves the 'power people' subgenre, this felt like a heartfelt breath of fresh air. It's got imperfect people with powers who need just as much help (if not more in some cases) than the rest of us normal people.Everyone should listen to this show <3
The original idea is very good. The first season is quite interesting but the action is very limited : of course, it's about a shrink so, it's about talking about your inner struggles... But the show only gets talkative at some point and consequently the lack of action makes the show a bit repetitive.
love all the episodes tart with episode 101. Dr. Bright provides therapy for the strange and unusualwww.nctorganics.com
Took awhile to finally get into the plot and story, but it was good.Update: Just finished The College Tapes season. Yikes, the speeches about emotions are long and add nothing to the story. And you get hit with it every single episode. You know how everyone feels after the first 10 minute speech or two, but every episode... It gets old fast.
Warning! Addictive as hell. Aw gee, this podcast was literally the only reason I signed up for Luminary! Because it addicted me so much I had to listen to the Second series and pay. First one is free! But you will love the roller coaster and you will laugh, cry, panic, rage, fall in love and become awe struck by each character. It was really great and so relatable too. Try the Bright Sessions and you’ll realise there are good quality podcasts out there with really good voice actors. No excessive or crappy dramatic pauses in this one. And best of all it does resolve itself so if you don’t want to listen to the AM and pay ? you don’t need to. You might want to though. I sure did.
The Bright Sessions is a five-season show followed by two spinoff seasons. I listened to the first five seasons and The AM Archives. The first five seasons follow a group of people with superpowers in therapy; ex. a time-traveler's anxiety sets off her power, a teenage boy is an empath. The show focuses on relationship building, found families, as well as mental health (the portrayal of which has its positives and occasional negatives as certain characters are villainized while others' flaws are ignored, while other portrayals and discussions of how it affects the characters are interesting). Many characters are interesting, the dialogue is fun and many emotional character beats hit. The justification for the framing device of everything being a recording gets stretched thin at points. The AM Archives follows a few characters from the first five seasons and is not as character-driven in its plot. It sort of underlines the mixed treatment of mental health portrayal in this universe, as the plotline about institutionalizing people with dangerous abilities leans towards the side of 'it fucks people up but here's why it's necessary sometimes actually.' The dangerous atypicals are taken away and I'm not sure how they're rehabilitated or why that wasn't explored further in this story that dealt with incarceration.
A slow-burning and intense drama surrounding a therapist and her clients. The characterisation is superb, and the "strange and unusual" element is grounded in very real, human responses and interactions, as stories are revealed and psychological tensions emerge. It's a quality audio drama, very involving, with extremely well-drawn characters and plot.
The Bright Sessions? More like the blight sessions. Shippen, to her credit, CAN get performances. And there's an ambition here that one usually does not associate with the doldrums of audio drama. Still, why am I cautious? Why do I feel as if I'm being played? This is ultimately why I can't go all in on The Bright Sessions. Because I really feel as if nobody cares about living. I really feel as if this project is an exercise in phony belief and phony empathy. Oh well!
Creator Lauren Shippen seems to have a direct line to the hearts and minds of her listeners. I defy anyone not to be taken in with the emotionally rich character development and the stellar audio quality.
This is the first audio drama podcast I ever listened to. I really liked the story, the pacing was nice and I especially love how the well-crafted the characters were.
I enjoyed first two seasons very much, but couldn't really get into season 3. At the point I was listening, all the characters seemed very well written - each was their own person with their own background and seem real enough to empathise with them easily - except for Damien.
as a queer person in a conservative country, this podcast made me feel safe, it made me feel happy, i am, forever indebted to this show. thank you for everything. thank you for taking me on a journey. it's because of you that i feel comfortable within my own mind and skin again. thank you.
Found this accidentally and so glad I did. So addictive and just a wonderful journey in storytelling.
Beautifully created characters and complex yet believable relationships.
This was my gateway podcast and I have yet to look back. Such a wonderful, well written story. It sucks you into a world that you just don't want to leave.
Sitting in the therapy sessions for powered people. This can get really emotional and intense. I have cried many times while listening to this.
Spectacularly engaging. More, please! I love the characters, and i wish there was more episodes just managing their mental health
